Uganda Africa Safari

After all of the amazing places and experiences with have had around world, Africa is the only place we have said we would like to return to. A number of years ago the possibility of a trip trekking gorillas was mentioned and the response (guess who?) was, "Are you crazy?" International Expeditions (Kim Guth) put this custom trip together for just the two of us. The entire trip was amazing and exceeded our expectations. Uganda is called a 3rd world country and by our USA standards it probably is. Even with this, the people are happy, grow and raise much of what they need. They have no refrigeration so their daily routine is to take only what they need from the garden for the day then go to the butcher to purchase meat and it must be used that day. Daily treks with yellow water containers is probably the biggest issue they have. The children have an opportunity for a good education, many times provided by the Catholic church as well as the government. Many of the parents are still not convinced that an education is worthwhile and keep the children home to work. We did observe that the young men did very little except ride their motorcycles and hang out. It would be great if some company could come in and give them opportunity to learn some skills. The most profound statement we heard on the entire trip was a man who said, "never in his life time did he expect to see electricity in his village. They now have it but don't know how to use it nor can they afford to". Mostly they just charge their phones on it. There are a number of places now using solar. All of the roads are dirt, large rocks and deep ditches - - bumpy road doesn't begin to describe what it felt like. We stayed in unique lodges, really tasty meals, unbelievable views and hippos eating the grass all night right outside our tent room. We wore out our arms waving back at all of the kids along the way. We flew into Entebee, then traveled to four national parks and went by small boat on the Nile several times. | |
