Leaving Monte Verde on the bumpiest
road I have ever been on (supposedly improved) to the countryside
leading to Lake Arenal. This is the largest man made lake in Costa
Rica, the process relocating entire communities then flooding the
area. Electricity is produced from this lake which sits in the shadow
of Volcano Arenal, one of the most active volcanoes on the Earth.
It has been continuously erupting since 1968. Often steam clouds
completely hid it. The sign on the other side of the lake indicates
that there are crocodiles in it.
